Taika Seiyu Oyata (1930-2012)

Taika Seiyu Oyata founded Ryu Te Ren Mei® and Oyata Shin Shu Ho Ryu®. Taika trained and taught martial arts for over 60 years until his death in 2012. He is still recognized around the world for the unique understanding of body mechanics he had and his abilities in the areas of kobudo, tuite and kyusho jitsu.

Due to his family lineage, Taika Oyata had the unique opportunity to train under two ancient warriors, Uhugushuku Tan Mei and Wakinaguri Tan Mei. From them, he learned the principles of weapons fighting, weapons kata, the theory of technique as well as tuite and kyusho jitsu. Upon the death of these bushi, Taika Oyata trained with Master Nakamura where he learned the 12 empty hand katas taught in Ryu Te® today. He also was instrumental in the furthering of bogu kumite, using protective gear to allow full power blows while minimizing injury.

In the late 1960's, several of Taika's students encouraged him to come to the United States to teach his art. In 1977, he established his organization in Independence, Missouri, where he lived until his death in 2012.
